WHAT IS A CONCUSSION?

Concussions are traumatic brain injuries that must be taken seriously. Concussions can occur in any sport or recreational activity. That is why all coaches, parents, and athletes need to learn concussion signs and symptoms and what to do if a concussion occurs. Below you will find information detailing concussion recognition, management and prevention.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS1

WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT?

SIGNS OBSERVED BY PARENTS OR GUARDIANS

  • Appears dazed or stunned 
  • Headache or “pressure” in head
  • Is confused about assignment or position 
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Forgets sports plays 
  • Balance problems or dizziness
  • Is unsure of game, score, or opponent 
  • Double or blurry vision
  • Moves clumsily 
  • Sensitivity to light

SIGNS OBSERVED BY ATHLETE

  • Answers questions slowly 
  • Sensitivity to noise
  • Loses consciousness (even briefly) 
  • Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy, or groggy
  • Shows behavior or personality changes 
  • Concentration or memory problems
  • Can’t recall events prior to hit or fall 
  • Confusion
  • Can’t recall events after hit or fall 
  • Does not “feel right”

WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT?

  1. Make sure the coach or parent is notified.
  2. Athlete should avoid play immediately.
  3. Seek medical attention right away.
  4. Understand that it is not smart to play with a concussion.
  5. Make sure the coach and school nurse are notified and are updated on the athlete’s  medical status.

PREVENTION AND PREPARATION

PROPER FIT IS ESSENTIAL FOR A PLAYER'S COMFORT & PROTECTION

It is important that you practice and play sensibly, and as always, teach or utilize proper form and head positioning when participating in football contact. A properly fitted helmet does not prevent the serious head or neck injuries a player might receive while participating in football.
