RIDDELL WINS HELMET PATENT INFRINGEMENT SUIT AGAINST SCHUTT
By Riddell on August 10, 2010Ruling Finds Schutt Infringed Riddell’s Concussion Reduction Technology Patents
(CHICAGO, August 10, 2010) – A federal court jury in Madison, Wis., has found that Schutt Sports Inc.’s DNA and ION football helmets infringed the concussion reduction technology features of the Riddell Revolution family of football helmets. The jury awarded Riddell just under $30 million in damages for Schutt’s infringing activities.
Riddell, the leading manufacturer of football helmets and a division of Easton-Bell Sports, had filed the original three-count federal court complaint in December 2008. Riddell had contended that Schutt, the company’s chief competitor, had illegally infringed upon Riddell’s patented concussion reduction technologies for football helmets and faceguards. The Riddell patents protect key technological features of helmets and faceguards that offer wearers greater injury protection, performance and personal comfort. The suit had alleged that despite Riddell’s patent protection, Schutt had unlawfully misappropriated Riddell’s head protection technology without permission.

with this crazy ruling it appears that riddell owns the rights to virtually and and every helmet design. this is especially ironic given many of riddell’s earlier facemasks were virtual copies of schutt facemasks. wonder how long it will be before riddell goes after ferrara’s xenith helmet?
The case here is patent infringement. The reason for the large award is the fact that is was blatant stealing of technology…not a helmet in general.
i want to order my helmet online but there inly two selections of facemask when will there be more?
We are currently working hard to replenish our inventory of face masks. We have no due date for those but check back often to see. Probably not in the next few weeks though.
Dont know how they could go after the Xenith it is a completly different design compared to any contemporary ones on the market. The Xenith deffinetly took helmet fit one step further and will probably make Riddell and Schutt follow suit.
Actually, the Patents used for the Xenith are ones that Riddell obtained and abandoned back in 1974. The Xenith is NOT cutting edge at all…It takes almost 4 seconds for the little shock bladders to recharge…What happens when you get hit but don’t go down and then get hit again? No wonder Riddell abandoned that FLAWED technology!!
That is not true. The zenith in neither based on riddell pat. nor does it take 4 sec for their diaphragm to re-inflate. Why would you give out false info like that. I was between buying my son a riddell or zenith, but after see this riddell will never get any business from me again.

Hello I’m an Arena Football player in Mexico, I just want to congratulate and thank riddell on making the outstanding revo speed helmet, I bought this helmet for this season and at first I was a little scared of how much lighter and confortable the speed is in comparison to other helmets that I used to wear, at first I did not believe it would protect me as good as any conventional helmet, but last week I was involved on an accidental helmet to helmet collision and I barely felt the hit, only in the video I could see why all my teammates were so worried, I went through the standard revision after a hit like that and everything is ok, its amazing how this so light (and good looking) helmet can save you from strong concusions, keep up the good work
Will Riddell ever use polycarbonate instead of ABS plastic for the speed youth helmets? ABS plastic is too heavy in my opinion and polycarbonate can offer the same protection in a lighter package.
This may be true, but it will also effect the pricing of the helmet. We try to keep our youth helmet prices as low as possible while offering the appropriate protection for the level of play. Thanks for the insight and we will keep you posted of any future changes in material choice.

I’ve been wanting to know, when will Riddell be offering the Speed Revolution Helmet w/ different facemasks. I want to buy one, but the facemasks that are offered are not good, vision wise, for my position, QB. When do you plan on releasing the facemask design that I see QB’s Carson Palmer, Matt Cassel and Jay Cutler wearing?

What does the average NFL team pay for a helmet?
You will have to ask them. NFL teams do not typically buy the helmets. Individual players have the choice of what helmet they wear so helmets are usually purchased individually.
I have an idea on a way to film games or practice. I would like to see a camera mounted in your speed helmet. on the sides of the helmet. Near the face mask so that coaches and players could see how players read plays and how the see the field.It would be an awesome tool. It would be very cool to see a game in the NFL. Any idea on a release date for the newer revo speed facemasks seen on many nfl players? i want to buy a revo speed helmet but the current facemask selection is small and not appealing.
It seems to me that since Schutt purchased Circle Systems Group, they’ve had a lot of legal problems.
Why do so many revolutions come flying off players heads? Seems the only helmets on NFl gamedays that come off are revolutions, any reason for this
We agree that to best protect the athlete a football helmet should remain in place during play. Riddell designs all of our helmets to fit snuggly and securely. Coaches and players do this most effectively by ensuring proper fit of the helmet and engaging all chinstrap attachment points.

Helmets are made to order. This means they begin production of your helmet once your order is submitted. This process usually takes from 7-10 business days. Shipment can take from 2-5 business days.

dna youth football helmet. well in his second season of use he was hit and the schell of the helmet cracked . i recently bought a youth speed revo helmet this past september and it is the most comfortable helmet he has ever worn , being that its only his second helmet ever . thank you ridell .

When will Riddell offer the “robot” facemask like the one Troy Palamalu has for the revo speed. I see it all over on t.v. but its not for sale on your page. just got the revo speed for christmas.It is awesome! Ive had them all. Schutt ion 4d, schutt standard, and adams as well. the revo speedis on the top of my list no doubt. It is incredibilly light and comfertable. Mainly overall it is very protective. It is the BEST helmet i have ever worn! Keep up the good work Riddell!
These new style Riddell helmets that have been designed are too gaudy and look terrible. Continue to use your new padding technology, but please use it in the older style Riddell helmet or come up with a new design.

I think Riddell should look into Unequal(R) impact absorbent technology with their helmets. Or atleast the use of Kevlar. Even a thin layer around the outer or inner shell of the helmet will reduce the forces of impact.

Mike, we can assure all of our Varsity Revolution Speed helmets are not sold out. There may be delayed availability based on what specific parts you choose when customizing, but we are not sold out. Both helmets will fit your son, the biggest difference between the youth and varsity model (besides the price) is the shell and liner system. The Varsity shell is Polycarbonate, while the youth is ABS plastic. Both meet NOCSAE standards. The varsity model is better equipped for the higher intensity levels of play that are associated with most High School, College and Professional levels of play.

It is up to you if you would like to configure the S2EG-SW-SP onto a helmet for purchase. You can purchase the face mask alone or on a fully customized helmet. Make sure you know all the features you wish to buy before calling to make the process run smoothly. The prices are always subject to vary but the SP model face masks usually run around $40-50. They are also subject to delays since we do not keep them in stock. Please try to find the time to give them a ring to make your purchase.
