Contact in football may result in CONCUSSION-BRAIN INJURY which no helmet can prevent. Symptoms include: loss of consciousness or memory, dizziness, headache, nausea or confusion. If you have symptoms, immediately stop playing and report them to your coach, trainer and parents. Do not return to a game or practice until all symptoms are gone and you have received medical clearance. Ignoring this warning may lead to another and more serious or fatal brain injury.

1) Helmet must be properly fitted. See instructions.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR HELMET SIZE

HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HEAD

Wrap a measuring tape around your head, just above the eyebrows. Note your size at the point of overlap.

If you do not have a measuring tape, simply use a piece of string and mark the point of overlap, then measure the string.

Use the size chart to establish the size helmet you should wear.

Please view our full return policy to understand why proper size is important.

SIZE CHART

SIZE
HEAD CIRCUMFERENCE
S
Up to 20 3/8"
M
20 3/8" - 22"
L
22" - 23 1/2"
XL
23 1/2" and up

If you are between helmet sizes, choose the smaller size.
Due to varying head shapes, sizes are only RECOMMENDATIONS.

HOW TO ACHIEVE PROPER FIT

  • Step 1
    CHECKING HEAD SIZE
    • Wrap a cloth measuring tape around the circumference of head
    • Measure with tape approvimately 1" above the player's eyebrows
    • Record measurement
    • Use the Riddell circumference chart below to select the proper helmet size
    • If measurement falls between helmet sizes, choose the smaller size.
  • Step 2
PUTTING ON / TAKING OFF HELMET
    Putting on helmet:
    • Hold helmet with thumbs over bottom of jaw pads
    • Place index fingers into ear holes
    • Pull helmet down into position
    Taking off helmet:
    • Unbuckle chin strap from bottom snaps
    • Place index fingers into ear holes
    • Press thumbs into bottom of jaw pads
    • Lift helmet up and off the head
  • Step 3
    ADJUSTING HELMET HEIGHT
    • Adjust inflatable pads using a Riddell inflation bulb
and a well-lubricated Riddell inflation needle
    • Insert needle
    • Pump Riddell inflation bulb to achieve proper fit
    • Remove needle
    • Front of helmet should be approximately
    1” above the player’s eyebrows
  • Step 4
    ADJUSTING BACK/SIDE LINER
    • Inflate for snug, comfortable fit front-to-back
    and side-to-side
  • Step 5
    ADJUSTING JAW PADS
    • Jaw pads should feel firm against the face
    • Insert needle into valve at exterior jaw flap
    • Inflate jaw pad
    • If non-inflatable jaw pads feel loose, change to a thicker size
    • If non-inflatable jaw pads feel tight, change to a thinner size
  • Step 6
    CHECKING FOR PROPER FIT
    • The skin of the forehead should move with the front pad. There should be no room for twisting
    • If helmet slides easily over the forehead, inflate helmet
liners or try a smaller helmet
    • Ensure a proper fit: Interlock hands on top of helmet and press down. Player should feel pressure on crown of head, not brow. Pressure on brow indicates improper fit. Front of helmet should be approximately 1” above the eyebrows.
    • To avoid injury or discomfort, never wear a helmet positioned too high or too low
  • Step 7
    ADJUSTING CHIN STRAP
To adjust soft or hard cup chin straps:
    • Buckle top and bottom of chin strap into the snaps
    above and below ear holes
    - Cup should be centered and snug over chin
    - Adjust chin strap until cup is firmly pressed against chin
    • When buckled, helmet should feel comfortable and snug
    • Chin straps are available in multiple sizes

THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER FIT

BEFORE PLAY

BEFORE YOU BEGIN, PLEASE READ AND FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE WARNING LABELS THAT COME WITH YOUR NEW HELMET.  AND REMEMBER: A PROPERLY FITTED HELMET IS AN IMPORTANT FIRST STEP IN PLAYER PROTECTION.

NEW RULE FOR LOSS OF HELMET DURING PLAY
If a player loses his helmet (other than as the result of a foul, like a face mask penalty), it will be treated like an injury. The player must leave the game and is not allowed to participate for the next play. Current injury timeout rules guard against using this rule to gain an advantage from stopping the clock. Additionally, if a player loses his helmet, he must not continue to participate in play to protect him from injury. Data collected during the 2011 season indicated that helmets came off of players more than two times per game.
This past NFL season the League tracked occurrences in which a helmet came off a player's head during game play. With each occurrence, team equipment managers reported the helmet's make and model, size, face mask style and chin strap style. At season's end, the League reported the results back to the equipment managers. Some teams had minimal occurrences, while others had as many as thirty-nine. One occurrence is too many. Below you will find a few steps to help prevent helmets coming off during game play.

  • Attain player and organizational support. Only the player and his organization can ensure the player is wearing his helmet and chin strap properly. Without this support, you are fighting a losing battle.
  • Check and maintain all snaps and buckles. Snaps and buckles tend to fatigue throughout the year and should be switched out on a regular basis.
  • Ensure the player is wearing the proper size helmet. Players tend to favor bigger helmets in order to gain more comfort.
  • Make sure the Jaw (S, Z or Face Frame Pads) are secure against the face and mandible. Pads should feel snug but not tight.
  • Make sure that the chin strap is centered under the player's chin and the straps are taut and even on both sides.
  • Don't over-inflate the helmets. Over inflation leads to more rotation, which can cause the helmet to roll and slide off the player's head.
  • Check and maintain face masks on a regular basis. After a few games face masks start to spread and can loosen the helmet's fit.

WHAT IS A CONCUSSION?

Concussions are traumatic brain injuries that must be taken seriously. Concussions can occur in any sport or recreational activity. That is why all coaches, parents, and athletes need to learn concussion signs and symptoms and what to do if a concussion occurs. Below you will find information detailing concussion recognition, management and prevention.

For more information please visit this website:
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Concussion in Sports

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT?

SIGNS OBSERVED BY COACHING STAFF

  • Appears dazed or stunned
  • Is confused about assignment or position
  • Forgets an instruction
  • Is unsure of game, score, or opponent
  • Moves clumsily
  • Answers questions slowly
  • Loses consciousness (even briefly)
  • Shows mood, behavior, or personality changes
  • Can’t recall events prior to hit or fall
  • Can’t recall events after hit or fall

SIGNS OBSERVED BY ATHLETE

  • Headache or “pressure” in head
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Balance problems or dizziness
  • Double or blurry vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Sensitivity to noise
  • Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy, or groggy
  • Concentration or memory problems
  • Confusion
  • Just not “feeling right” or is “feeling down”

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU THINK YOUR ATHLETE HAS A CONCUSSION?

  1. If you suspect that an athlete has a concussion, remove the athlete from play and seek medical attention. Do not try to judge the severity of the injury yourself. Keep the athlete out of play the day of the injury and until a health care professional, experienced in evaluating for concussion, says s/he is symptom-free and it’s OK to return to play.
  2. Rest is key to helping an athlete recover from a concussion. Exercising or activities that involve a lot of concentration, such as studying, working on the computer, and playing video games, may cause concussion symptoms to reappear or get worse. After a concussion, returning to sports and school is a gradual process that should be carefully managed and monitored by a health care professional.
  3. Remember: Concussions affect people differently. While most athletes with a concussion recover quickly and fully, some will have symptoms that last for days, or even weeks. A more serious concussion can last for months or longer.

PROTECTION TOUR

The inaugural USA Football Protection Tour is a health and safety program that educates youth football players, parents, coaches and administrators on the importance of proper equipment fitting, tackling fundamentals and concussion awareness. At each tour stop, USA Football, with the support of the NFL team in that market, will conduct a free one-day event for local youth football leagues that will deliver expert-driven health and safety content for coaches, parents
and players.

Each event session is limited to a set number athletes plus their parents. Each participant will be properly fitted for a helmet by a Riddell expert. If you have your helmet - bring it. If not, we’ll fit one for you and provide you with the proper measurements to share with your youth football league.

I started on my varsity team as a freshman at quarterback because I am a runner and so I am not that big but because of this helmet I suffered no concussions and only minor pain from huge hits. I absolutely recommend this helmet and all my friends have it and nobody has gotten a concussion yet and with this helmet i do not believe any of us will.

Over priced

It's good helmet just too heavy and the price for the paint is a lot and on the Virginia tech the schutt had a better helmet that was cheaper and lighter so just lower the price and fix a couple problems and try new i seas and at least
look at people's suggestions because the customer always right and can bring something new to help you guys and the face mask sticks far out so they want you to tackle the person with the face mask or would they rather have
you rap up with your hands besides that good helmet

It's good too heavy of a face mask and shell and the face mask sticks out to far do they want you to tackle with your face mask or shoulder pads and arms and too price they need to listen to people with ideas and stop being a company who doesn't care about the athletes and just want to make money and be a company who thrives to make this sport safe and too expensive lower the price and make it a lighter weight helmet and face mask. Satisfied but ratchet chin strap needs improvement

I bought this helmet for my 15 year old son who plays both on the O- and D-Lines. He loves the feel and comfort of the helmet, and I love its safety features. I am satisfied but the ratchet strap on this helmet has caused us a bit of a problem. They practice on a grass field which has small rocks and the rocks constantly get into the locking mechanism causing it to jam. So he needs to undo the entire ratchet system to clean it out weekly. Before their season ended, the chin strap needed to be replaced due to it no longer locking in place. This was a common problem with other teammates who had the same helmet.

Very Good

I recently bought a Speedflex and let me just say it is amazing!!! Padding is very comfortable, weight isn't too much trouble, and unlike previous helmets, the pads don't become rock hard in cold weather play! I play Offensive line, Defensive line, and linebacker so I take a lot of hits during a game. And ever since switching from my Schutt Vengance VTD 2, my head has felt amazing! Maybe the price could go down a bit, but even with the high price tag, it is definitely worth the buy! feel free to contact me at tanner.fink@icloud.com for any questions!

Worth It

I'm currently a freshman and my coach offers us to buy our helmets, I already knew I was going to buy it but I didn't know when. This helmet made me want to buy it as a freshman and I did. During our spring camp (during the end of my 8th grade year) I got a Revo Speed, I imminently fell in love with it. I said I would buy it and he gave us the option to buy a SeedFlex and I did. This is the most comfortable helmet I know. It is really light, and has good durability. The only reason I gave it the durability I id is because, during our summer team camp I got hit hard in the head, helmet to helmet and one of the screws that helps hold the left jaw pad in place, fell out and my jaw pad is loose. Also the chin strap retains a large amount of sweat and it will start to slide off of your chin. I think I like the older chin straps better, except for the top snaps that are held in place. Other than those two reasons I think it is a wonderful helmet. One thing I really notice is that it doesn't hurt as much when you get hit in the helmet.

I was concerned ordering it through the mail would not allow trying it on however I used the suggested sizing chart and the fit was perfect. The quality is the highest I've seen and the innovative design is cutting edge technology. My goal was to give my son the highest amount of protection available....mission accomplished! I am a D Lineman in Illinois and I have been using helmets provided by the school/previous teams my whole life, I've tried my friends Xenith's and some 360's during practice, but they don't even come close to this helmet. Before, I would get headaches and was afraid to hit people as hard as I knew I could. This helmet not only looks and feels amazing, but it makes me feel safe too, it took me a while but I worked for it and bought it myself at 16. And it honestly is the best purchase I've ever made.

Will not solve the concussion problem, its going in the wrong direction for that to happen

Its an improvement but it will never come close to solving the problem, , it doesnt matter how much padding you have its still going to compress and create energy and force, hence, a concussion. There is only one way it can be done.

proper use of the Riddell Speedflex Helmet

My son Evan played strong safety and running back this past year. Hard hitting kid, he clobbered a local kid and it made the ticker at the bottom of the screen during a broncos game. No concussions, loved this helmet. I have an amazing picture if you want it, that reflects the title I gave. Evan has perfect follow through after knocking the linebacker on his bottom and knocking off his helmet. Picture captures it all

it saved me from concussion

its awesome. I play high school football in Florida and I got hit on the helmet and got the wind knocked out of me and when I came off the field the trainer told me that if I didn't have that extra cushion on top of my helmet I would of had a serious concussion

Extremely comfortable helmet but...

I like this helmet very much, very comfortable, light and beatiful design, but as a defensive player when going to make a tackle I've noticed that the helmet moves a lot, moves in such a way that it has started to make a cut on the side of my neck, every time I make a tackle.

Great helmet

This is a very good helmet unlike the speed and the 360 it has ventilation. They improved the flex guard system by inforcing the face mask. They made it a lot more confortable them the 360... The cheek pads are a lot softer and confortable. a very good product overall

My speedflex

It's amazing how comfortable it is. Most helmets will make your head feel like it is being squeezed but this speedflex is like a memory foam bed in a helmet.

Incredible except for....

I don't normally write reviews but I can honestly say that this is one of the comfiest, safest, most locked in feeling in any helmet I have ever used. Hits hurt less and It is perfect except for a few flaws. everytime you hit hard and you are sweating the chinstrap comes down and hits your neck which basically hurts and takes you out for the rest of the play, I have adjusted it but it must be the Styrofoam chincup just gives too much, anyway several of my teammates have this same problem and are about to go back to our old helmets. Also the helmet does not dry well and is not easy to clean so if you sweat a lot leave it outside after practice. Also it is a very heavy helmet.

Disappointed

Over engineered. Riddell took a simple working concept like the chin strap and ruined it. The ratchet strap on this helmet is not user friendly and constantly binds up. Also for the money which is twice a Xenith the quality doesn't even come close. For $560.00 I would not recommend to anyone. I'm very disappointed with this product!

unhappy

Can't say anything about the quality of the helmet. Ordered over seven weeks ago. Was told that it would be 4-6 weeks which would be perfect timing for spring ball. Was told last week to call this week and today was told that a are are not sure when I'll get it. Could be this week or could take longer. The only reason I order through Riddell was because nobody else carried them. Went on sports unlimited Web site today and they carry them and will be shipped next day of my order. So tomorrow will be cancelling my order with Riddell and take my business back to a company I like and have history with. Way to look after the little guy Riddell. I will never do business directly through you ever again!

Great Product

Switched from a schutt vengence, and I am impressed on all levels. The look of the helmet stands out in a great way.

Pros:
Field of vision
Weight
Design
Chin strap
Smell*

Cons:
Price
Face-mask shape**
Replacement parts***
Production time****

* - Although this is my first Riddell, the interior is different than the revo speed which smelled bad after a lot of use based on reviews from teammates and smelling them myself. I use my speed flex up to 3 times a week for 2 or more hours and so far so good.

** - The shape of the face mask is new which requires more flexion of visors to fit although some currently on the market will work [Bangerz]. This should get corrected over time as the market for a speed flex specific visor increases.

*** - The only way to get replacement parts is through Riddell, and unless you purchase the additional items that you need in advance, if something fails you have to wait until your replacement parts come in.

**** - The website states a 4-6 week delivery time which requires timed planning to get the helmet before the season starts. However my order only to 10 days from the date that I ordered to the time it was delivered.

Very good

Helmet is extremely comfortable (extreme improvement on my old concussion bucket). Not many cons but they are only small things like one of the bits of plastic on the end of the chin strap has fallen off which isn't a problem and the only other con is to pump up the helmet you need something to unscrew the caps to expose the pump valves.
Overall extremely good.
